G77+China to strengthen its role in the international context

Cuba-Cumbre-G77-768x576
Havana, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) The G77+China showed Saturday its willingness to reinforce its role in the current international context.

At the end of the Summit, which brought together high-level representatives of more than a hundred nations, the Group´s commitment to strengthen unity and solidarity in order to achieve its objectives was reaffirmed, as well as the full respect for the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law.

The text underscored the deep concern over challenges generated by the present unfair international economic order for developing countries, a situation aggravated by issues including the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, unilateral coercive measures and multiple crises.

Other scourges mentioned were the pressure on food and energy, displacement of people, inflation, rising extreme poverty, increasing inequalities within and between countries, adverse effects of climate change, environmental degradation and digital divides, among others.

The G77+China expressed its deep concern at the disease, death and continuing socio-economic disruption and devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated inequalities with a disproportionate impact on developing countries.

“This situation underscores the emergency of strengthening global solidarity and international cooperation with and support for developing countries to prevent, prepare for and respond to pandemics and other health emergencies, taking into account lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic,” the text added.

The bloc called for a pressing comprehensive reform of the international financial architecture and a more inclusive and coordinated approach to global financial governance, laying stress on cooperation among countries. This includes issues such as increasing the representation of developing countries in global decision-making and policy-making bodies, which would enhance the capabilities of these nations to access science, technology and innovation.

Participants expressed the need for countries and parties to dedicate themselves to the pursuit of global development and win-win cooperation for scientific and technological development.

Considered the largest and most diverse group of countries in the multilateral sphere with 134 members, the G77+China met in Havana with the presence of several dozen heads of state and government, vice-presidents, ministers and other high-level authorities.
