At the Summit –held at the Havana International Conference Center (HICC) – the Colombian leader defended the pressing need to move towards a decarbonized economy worldwide and exchange of debt for climate action.
Petro noted that science grants that the main problem of humanity nowadays and in the near future is climate crisis, and that the poor, the pariahs on Earth, will be the most affected on a global scale.
He further pointed to the decarbonized economy as a solution to climate crisis, and urged the G77+China to discuss on this issue to find out how to build such a world and through what financing system.
The leader assured that the most viable and powerful path is to reduce debt, and there must be a global discussion of the financial system to achieve this goal.
Concerning public funds, Petro stated: ¨we´re saying that public sector is once again at the center of the transformations. It takes changing paradigms to facilitate these investments to move towards a decarbonized economy; for instance, it is needed to set a Marshall Plan globally to be able to save the life on the planet.
