Canal in Haiti violates 1929 treaty, Dominican president reiterates

Havana, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, reiterated today that the construction of a canal on the Dajabón River violates the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Arbitration of 1929 and defended the closure of the border with Haiti.

The day before, the head of state announced the decision to completely close transit between those two countries by sea, land and air, based on the conflict created by the construction on Haitian soil of that work in the water current, also known as Massacre.

In a press conference held in this capital in the context of the Summit of the Group of 77 and China, the president stated that the river originates in his nation and only enters less than two kilometers into the neighboring territory.

To a question from Prensa Latina, Abinader explained there is an issue that worries them even more than the course of the river, and that is the existence of “dissociative and anarchist agents who are bringing this anarchy to the interior of Haiti and who even want to affect the Government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.”

“So they are creating this situation with a unilateral decision, when our 1929 treaty says that any provision of border water infrastructure must be addressed and coordinated between both sides”, he added.

According to the president of the Dominican Republic, this has been a unilateral work that his country cannot allow, and they adopted the necessary measures at this time to seek to stop the canal, which he expressed that it has a very inadequate design and does not have feasibility.

The important thing about this issue, and that is why we are also working with international organizations and the Haitian Government itself, is that there are anarchist groups that seek, especially, to destabilize, highlighted Abidaner, who said that the Dominican Republic has always wanted to have a good relationship with the State of Haiti.

At the beginning of September, Santo Domingo reported that it asked the Haitian authorities to immediately stop the restart of the construction of a canal carried out by private individuals with the purpose of diverting the waters of the Dajabón or Masacre.

The day before, after the announcement of the border closure, the Government of Haiti assured that its country has the full right to extract water from the river and asserted that the authorities will take the necessary measures to protect the interests of its people.
