UNO’s board of directors reported that they will collect signatures in the country from citizens who are against the president’s aspiration to continue leading the country for another term despite allegations that such action violates the constitution.
We, as standard bearers of the right and obligation to insurrection, declare ourselves in the process of insurrection’, said UNO’s lawyer, Rafael Garciaguirre.
The lawyer explained that their call is not to take up arms but to ‘ask the citizens for their support and to ask the international community for its recognition’. The group will insist before the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) to present a request in order to reject the Bukele’s candidacy, who according to the polls is a barrier in the ballot boxes to his opponents, although some voices do not discard surprises due to the worsening of the Salvadoran economy.
We are ready to present it again”, asserted Garciaguirre.
Already in July the TSE rejected this request arguing that until Nuevas Ideas party does not register its formula it is improper to analyze the case, although its members support the judicial authorities’ decision that would allow Bukele to be a candidate.
