A brief note from the Foreign Ministry of the Dominican Republic announced last night that a delegation from Port-au-Prince travelled to Santo Domingo so as to participate in a meeting of the Binational Water Board. The text also stated that the Government of Luis Abinader requested to stop the construction of the canal in Haiti “with the objective of taking water from the Dajabón River.”

The Ministry reported that progress was made in the talks, which will continue this Thursday, but did not offer details on who participated.

The first information about the meeting was released in a dispatch by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Haiti.

President Luis Abinader assured last Monday that the Dominican Republic will defend its sovereignty, guarantee national security and will not allow the Dajabón River, also known as Masacre, to be diverted.

At a meeting of the National Security Council held on Monday, it was agreed to completely close the border if the conflict is not resolved by Thursday, and to suspend visas for Haitians until further notice, among other actions.

Haitian media published on Wednesday that Ariel Henry’s administration did not make any official statements on the measures adopted by Santo Domingo, although several voices agreed that Haiti should not paralyze its works due to pressure from a foreign government.
