TASS director is elected president of CIS Agencies Council

Bishkek, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) The general director of the Russian news agency TASS, Andrei Kondrashov, was elected president of the Council of State News Agencies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Kyrgyz media reported on Wednesday.

According to the official news agency of Kyrgyzstan, Kabar, the decision was made unanimously by the participants in the 29th meeting of the CIS Information Council in Bishkek.

Kondrashov thanked participants for the confidence, and noted that he perceives the election to the post of Council chairman as respect for common origins and traditions. “After all, we all came out of TASS, which recently, on September 1, celebrated its 119th anniversar,” he pointed out.

In this regard, the head of TASS expressed confidence that the CIS news agencies will maintain and develop creative ties and professional and friendly contacts both within the framework of the activities of the community’s Information Council and in their day-to-day news work.

“Our interaction, the opportunity to share experience, is certainly important to maintain and strengthen our authority and leading positions in the media of our countries, both in the common CIS information space and on a global scale,” Kondrashov noted.

During the meeting in Bishkek, the heads of State news agencies exchanged work experiences and discussed promising areas for the development of creative cooperation in the coverage of humanitarian activities in the CIS countries.

The agenda also included issues related to the organization of professional development seminars, exchanges of journalists, organization of press tours and other joint projects.

The CIS Information Council was created in November 1995. Its members include the heads of State news services from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia and Tajikistan.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of State media authorities from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the CIS Executive Committee.
