The event will bring together the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, and the president of the 78th period of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, in the symbolic place that houses the Peace Bell donated by the UN Association of Japan in 1954.
Although the International Day of Peace is celebrated on September 21st, the organization brought forward the ceremony in the midst of preparations for the High-Level segment of the General Assembly and the SDGs’ Summit, scheduled for next week.
Under the motto “Actions for peace: our ambition for the #GlobalGoals”, the commemoration recognizes the individual and collective responsibility to promote peace in the world.
Faced with challenges such as climate or geopolitical threats, the United Nations considers the end of wars essential to achieve the 2030 Agenda in the year that marks the halfway point since its launch.
The relationship between the goals set and the World Day reminds that the purpose of the SDGs seeks to bring the world closer to more peaceful, just and inclusive societies, free of fear and violence.
The global date is dedicated to strengthen the ideals of peace through respect for 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire.
The Peace Bell traditionally rings twice a year: on the first day of spring and on the date around this World Day.
