Egypt mobilizes aid for Libya

Cairo, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) Egypt mobilized resources and forces to aid Libya, which was devastated after Hurricane Daniel, and where some 140,000 Egyptian citizens live, the Al-Ahram newspaper reported.

The Egyptian Armed Forces sent three military transport planes loaded with medical supplies, food and a group of 25 rescuers equipped for relief operations. A fourth plane will evacuate the Egyptian citizens that were injured and killed by the meteorological phenomenon.

The Coast Guard Department in the Libyan city of Tobruk announced on Facebook that they handed over to Egyptian authorities the bodies of 145 Egyptians who died due to the hurricane.

The Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, Osama Askar, arrived in Libya on Tuesday to coordinate the provision of urgent logistical and humanitarian aid.

Osama Askar announced that the delegation will work with Libyan authorities to assess the needs of those affected by the storm and provide aid accordingly.

President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi spoke yesterday by telephone with the President of the Presidential Council of Libya, Mohamed Al-Menfi, according to an official statement. El-Sisi reaffirmed Cairo’s full solidarity “with the brotherly people of Libya in the face of the repercussions of Storm Daniel” and expressed his deepest condolences.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that it is closely monitoring the consequences of Daniel, which also hit Egypt, although with less force, and announced that it is working with the Egyptian consulate in the city of Benghazi to obtain data of Egyptian nationality victims.
