Brazil minister claims 17-year sentence for Jan. 8 coup defendant

Brasilia, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) of the coup incidents on January 8 in Brazil, claimed Wednesday 17 years imprisonment for the first defendant accused for anti-democratic actions.

Based on audiovisual evidence, De Moraes voted for the conviction against Aécio Lúcio Costa Pereira for invasions and depredations at the headquarters of the Three Powers in this capital.

The rapporteur attributed to the accused the crimes of violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, qualified damage, coup d’état, deterioration of the demolished patrimony and armed criminal association.

Summing up, the sentences amount to 17 years, being 15 calendars and six months of detention and one year and six months, in addition to 150 days of fine, being considered the value of one third of the minimum wage (434 reais, about USD $88) for each day.

Such request means no that Costa Pereira was convicted. The votes of the other 10 ministers of the superior court are still pending.
