The cosmonauts surpassed the previous mark achieved by Piotr Dubrov, who remained on the ISS for 355 days, three hours and 45 minutes from April 2021 to March 2022.
Prokopiev and Petelin arrived at the ISS on September 21ST, 2022 on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft.
Initially, their mission was slated to last 188 days. However, after the ship’s cooling system suffered damage in December 2022, it was decided to launch Soyuz MS-23 unpiloted in order to bring the crew to Earth.
The mission of Prokopiev, Petelin and Rubio was extended by a few months to make the most of the resources of the Soyuz MS-23.
The damaged Soyuz MS-22 returned to Earth on March 28th, 2023, carrying returnable equipment on board that was less sensitive, than man, to extreme temperatures.
Roscosmos recalled that the record for the longest space flight so far belongs to Soviet/Russian cosmonaut Valeri Poliakov, who stayed aboard the Mir space station (now inactive) for more than 437 days between 1994 and 1995.
He is followed by Sergei Avdeev, who flew aboard Mir for 379 days between 1998 and 1999, and Vladimir Titov and Musa Manarov, who stayed on the Mir for almost 366 days between 1987 and 1988.
