In a message posted on X Social Media, Francis was sorry about 9/11´s overall death toll.
“We recall today with deep sorrow and sadness the 9/11 terror attacks that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 victims from all over the world,” Francis posted on X.
In his message, Francis reiterated the pressing need to collectively fight off “terrorism and extremism.”
“Let’s join hands and say #NeverAgain,” Francis posted.
The date marks the worst terror attack in U.S. history, as four planes – two American Airlines and two United Airlines – were hijacked by 19 terrorists.
At 08:46 hours (local time), the first aircraft hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center while minutes later, another would hit the South Tower.
The third plane crashed into the Pentagon headquarters in Washington, D.C., and the fourth fell in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
