Island countries ask for protection from climate change

cambio-climatico-1
Saint John, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne addressed on Monday International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg, Germany, to request protection for island countries affected by global warming.

The PM began his arguments of the legal case filed in that court in his capacity as co-president of the Commission of Small States on Climate Change and International Law (COSIS), the Antigua Newsroom website referred.

According to the press release, this body seeks the advisory opinion of the ITLOS on whether carbon dioxide emissions cause ocean pollution, and on the determination of the responsibility of States to mitigate it.

The action represents COSIS’ initial step in its mission to hold major polluters accountable and in seeking justice for the nations most harmed, the media outlet noted.
