Ten Argentines to be tried for covering up death flights

Buenos Aires, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) The Federal Court of Mar del Plata confirmed the trial of ten people involved in the covering up of the so-called death flights during the last civil-military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983), Página 12 informed on Friday.

Seven police officers, a doctor, a judge, and a municipal official will be tried for murdering or drugging people detained in clandestine torture centers and then throwing them into the sea from planes to prevent their bodies from being found, the newspaper reported.

Former judge Carlos Facio, accused of abuse of power and dereliction of duty, was among the defendants. He did not accede to a request by Nora Cortiñas and other Mothers of Plaza de Mayo to investigate what happened to 14 bodies found on the coast in December,1978.

Physician Miguel Cabral and Juan Domingo Montenegro, former head of Cadastre in General Lavalle municipality, Buenos Aires Province, will be also tried. They participated in the actions to prevent the bodies, buried as unknown, from being found.

Also involved are former Buenos Aires police officers Domingo and Alberto Martínez, Emilio Luchetti, Juan Antonio Estrada, Mario Castronuovo, Ednio Llorens, and Francisco Aristegui.
