Brazil declared its emancipation from Portugal on September 7, 1822. Prince Pedro I of Brazil (Don Pedro) was in charge of proclaiming the Cry of Independence that day on the banks of the Ipiranga river, in the state of Sao Paulo.
Brazil celebrates the date on Thursday with the theme Democracy, sovereignty and union, and a huge parade in the capital’s Esplanade of the Ministries.
