The event was held at the Palacio San Martin in Buenos Aires, and was convened by Argentina and the International Committee of the Red Cross. It was attended by representatives from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and the Dominican Republic, among other countries.
As part of the event, experts and diplomats exchanged experiences and discussed the use of useful tools that should allow CONADIH to support their respective states in the implementation of programs to guarantee respect for humanitarian law.
The prosecution of violations of international regulations, the protection of cultural assets, the legislative response to the problem of disappeared persons and their families, and the ratification and implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty were some of the topics analyzed.
During the inauguration of the meeting, the Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs, Santiago Cafiero, highlighted the importance of the topic, and pointed out that Latin America and the Caribbean face the challenge of continuing to be “the region of peace in the world most densely populated”.
“This is a great asset that we are building together. We are also proud to be a region free of nuclear weapons as the central point of a friendly and peaceful vocation for the entire region,” he said.
He also urged the definition of roadmaps to act jointly facing current difficulties. “Many of the situations that are experienced are the product of not having had a dialogue at the adequate moment and at the right time,” he said.
