In statements to Prensa Latina, the head of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) addressed the extreme vulnerability in the area given its geographic position and the number of countries in an area frequently hit by hurricanes.
Despite being responsible for 8% of the world’s polluting emissions, the damage caused here by prolonged droughts, strong heat waves and heavy rains is huge, Salazar-Xirinachs stated, while stressing the pressing need to use international spaces, strengthen the role of development banking, use the tax platform, where ECLAC is the technical secretariat, and work for the reform of the global financial architecture.
