Haitian Government’s passivity denounced in the face of violence

Port-au-Prince, Sep 4 (Prensa Latina) The National Union of Haitian Police Officers on Monday denounced authorities' passivity in the face of the violent escalation of the Grand Ravine gang in Carrefour Feuilles, which has displaced thousands of people.

The union structure criticized that despite the calls from the population, the Government still does not respond to the residents’ request to prevent the invasion of the armed groups.

The Union described such behavior as irresponsible and warned that it endangers citizens, including police officers who live in popular neighborhoods and who are usually the main targets of gangs.

The situation has caused a psychological disturbance in the officers’ professional lives and has put their families at risk, the institution said.

It also called on authorities to take into consideration the situation of the residents of Carrefour-Feuilles, and in particular the police officers, who are the main victims, as well as to provide financial and psychological support to the officers.

Some 10,000 people had to flee Carrefour Feuilles, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, in August, due to the incursion of the Grand Ravine gang in its attempt to control the area.
