According to an official statement, the authorities will review the growing flows of irregular migrants on their way to the United States and Canada, via the Darién jungle, which amounts to 331,023 from January 1st to August 28th, most of them Venezuelans, Haitians, and Ecuadorians.
According to the latest figures from the National Migration Service, the entry of irregular migrants through the territory continues to increase significantly, to the point that the entry of 10,928 migrants was registered between Monday and Wednesday of this week.
The Minister of Security, Juan Manuel Pino, stated that Costa Rica is experiencing the same effect as Panama, being a country of transit, and warned about the environmental damage suffered by the Darién National Park, which borders Colombia.
Pino ruled out the closure of borders as a measure because there are no highways in the region, but announced that they will adopt other actions, which will be announced in due course.
Panama recently launched the communication campaign “Darién is not a route, it is a jungle” which begins to spread more information about what migrants may face on their journey, such as
the natural dangers and attacks, by traffickers and gangs associated with organized crime.
