Lebanese Prime Minister reiterates respect to UN resolutions

Beirut, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) The interim prime minister, Najib Mikati, reiterated Lebanon's respect for all international resolutions of the United Nations (UN), especially number 1701.

The head of government made a statement in which he welcomed the issuance of a Security Council resolution into extending the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL).

The Minister highlighted the inclusion of work factor coordination with the Lebanese government in accordance with the agreement in the extension project.

Mikati reiterated the demand for Israel’s withdrawal from the still-occupied Lebanese territory and from all border points within the national territory.

He also called on the UN to put pressure on Tel Aviv to stop its continued air, sea and land violations.

After a postponement, the UN Security Council voted yesterday in favor of the French draft resolution on the extension of the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon; 13 voted in favor, while Russia and China abstained.

Security Council resolution 1701 was adopted on August 11th, 2006, and emphasizes Lebanon’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence within its internationally recognized borders.

The UN established the international mandate on March 19th, 1978, aimed at confirming Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory and restoring international peace and security. After the 2006 war, the UN enhanced UNIFIL’s mandate under resolution 1701, assigning it additional tasks alongside the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon.
