The National Civil Police reported that more than 30 members of “maras” that sought to reorganize criminal structures were captured in a coordinated operation with the Attorney General’s Office.
The Minister of Justice and Security, Gustavo Villatoro, specified that 37 criminals were arrested, who will be presented before the courts.
“They were trying to reorganize the gangs… Haven’t they understood that we are no longer going to allow terrorist structures to continue growing in El Salvador? We have a whole Security Cabinet that is going to persecute, capture and bring them to justice,” wrote the minister in social networks, identifying the action with the name of “Operation Tazumal”.
The report indicated that the arrested gangbangers will be prosecuted for aggravated homicide and illegal groups.
During the action against the gangs, 22 cell phones, a firearm, and 22 .45 rounds were seized.
As part of the actions to end the gangs, the authorities indicated that more than 70 of their members were expelled from Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica, thanks to the coordination established by local authorities with their counterparts in those nations.
