The Sanatorium Hospital has been under the control of the Grand Ravine gang for two days, forcing patients and medical staffers to leave the facility.
We are on the verge of a catastrophe, a disaster and a crisis without a name, Charles stated, according to Radio Métropole.
The Sanatorium is a reference hospital for pulmonary diseases and patients with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome who are currently being treated free of charge.
“TB treatment lasts six months; if a person with TB does not take his/her medication regularly, he/she can develop resistance. At this point the person can contaminate those around him. And those to whom he transmits tuberculosis will also develop a resistance that is difficult to treat”, Louis Charles explained.
Speaking to Magik 9, Louis Charles also explained that AIDS-infected people can also develop resistance without the drugs, and insisted that medical personnel are neutral and even in countries at war they are allowed to work.
Carrefour Feuilles, where the Sanatorium Hospital is located, has been under siege by gangs for weeks and in recent days armed men set fire to the sub-commissariat in the area.
Gangs’ actions forced over 5,000 people to flee their homes, while half a hundred lost their lives in August alone.
