Another 10 wells were drilled between July 2022 and June 2023, which lead to the discovery of 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, according to a statement made by Tarek El-Molla, Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources.
There are also projects to drill 25 wells in Zohr to increase the capacities of the field, which has reached a daily production of 2.2 billion cubic meters.
The Zohr field is the largest in the Mediterranean Sea, with estimated reserves of over 30 trillion cubic feet.
The Minister’s statement highlighted that British Petroleum is planning to invest 3.5 billion dollars into the prospecting and development of the sector in Egypt over the next three years.
After Egypt achieved its self-sufficiency in natural gas in 2018, the Egyptian authorities are trying to turn the country into an important provider of natural gas to Europe.
Over the past five years, in association with foreign companies, Egypt’s oil sector drilled 576 new natural gas wells and discovered 289 gas deposits, adding by this, 1.32 billion barrels of oil and 5.75 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to the country’s reserve.
