Over 3.7 million dengue cases reported worldwide – ECDC

ecuador-dengue-1
Geneva, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on Tuesday reported that over 3.7 million cases of dengue have been reported worldwide through August 23.

ECDC’s reports also included more than two deaths associated with the disease in 70 countries.

Concerning the European Union (EU), the ECDE considered the current probability of local transmission events of dengue and chikungunya viruses in areas where vectors are present to be high.

Environmental conditions favorable for vector activity and virus replication contribute to such situation.

Globally, the Americas have reported most cases in 2023 with over 3.3 million, 1.5 million of them confirmed, and more than 1,500 deaths as a result of significant outbreaks since the beginning of the year.

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), most of dengue infections in the region have been reported in Brazil and Peru.

Regarding chikungunya, some 320,000 cases and over 340 deaths have been reported in the past eight months in 20 countries: the Americas (14), Asia (four) and Africa (two).
