This curiosity is in the shadow of the development of MSMEs (micro, small and medium-sized enterprises), something that is gaining momentum these days, when these people, with great efforts, try to place themselves in the creative and productive panorama of the country.
The complicated manufacturing work and the wide variety of the assortment of the only Cuban company specialized in the production and sale of analog watches is called Tiempo de Luz (Time of Light), and it aims to reach the domestic and international tourist markets.
This is the case of Ernesto Barrios, owner of the company, who explained to Prensa Latina that since 2021 his firm has produced these 100-percent renewable watches, since it uses raw materials, parts and pieces from other equipment that are depreciated by customers or are put into liquidation by companies such as the Cimex Corporation.
It also takes advantage of the waste from the Caribbean Chain of Stores (TRD), both string, analog and batteries. The owner of Tiempo de Luz stated that he has a contract with Empresa Comercial Caracol S.A. (a Cuban chain).
This commercializing company specializes in Cuba’s most autochthonous products, such as cigars, rum, coffee and souvenirs.
This alliance between the entrepreneur and Caracol is aimed at producing and commercializing these watches in hotels and stores, a real novelty, in Cuba.
Approved by the Government in October 2021 as one of the first 60 MSMEs created in Cuba, Tiempo de Luz does not invest in raw materials since it takes advantage of everything and, in that regard, a carpenter uses different types of discarded wood for the creation of the case, which can be acana, mahogany, majagua or jiqui (wooden watches).
