Tropical Storm Idalia slow and erratic over northwestern Caribbean

Havana, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) reported today in its warning number five that Tropical Storm Idalia continues with a slow and erratic movement over the northwest of the Caribbean Sea.

The report issued by the Insmet Forecast Center at 6:00 p.m. local time this Sunday specified that during the day Idalia moved in different directions and in the last few hours it moved northeast at only six kilometers per hour.

Its center is located at 20.1 degrees North latitude and 85.5 degrees West longitude, which places it 155 kilometers east-southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, and 200 kilometers south of Cabo San Antonio in the province of Pinar del Río.

The tropical storm has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour with higher gusts. The central pressure dropped slightly to 995 hectoPascal.

The showers, rains and electrical storms associated with this system have intensified in the afternoon hours and cover an extensive area of the northwest of the Caribbean Sea, the Yucatan peninsula and channel, and reach Cuba.

Due to the flow of humid air and the atmospheric instability in the clouds with showers and electrical storms have been encouraged throughout Cuba, particularly in the western and central regions.

In the next 12 to 24 hours this organism will behave with slow movement, gaining something more in organization and intensity.

Its wide circulation will keep the rainy areas very close to or over the national territory, so the probability of rainfall is high, particularly in the western half, where it can be strong and intense in some locations.

Special attention should be paid to the rain, due to its persistence and intensity, mainly in the provinces of Pinar del Río, Artemisa and in the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, as well as the state of the sea to the south of those territories, where there will occur strong swells with accumulations of water in low coastal areas.

Due to the current position and future trajectory of this tropical storm, the Insmet Forecast Center is closely monitoring its evolution, so the next Tropical Cyclone Warning will be issued at 00:00 local time this Monday.
