Argentina’s Foreign Minister highlights importance of Brics

canciller-Santiago-Cafiero
Buenos Aires, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) Argentina's entry into the Brics group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) today represents a great opportunity to boost trade ties and multilateralism, highlighted the country's foreign minister Santiago Cafiero.

In an interview with the Télam news agency, the Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that a step is being taken to institutionalize the already existing ties with the member nations of this mechanism, where issues of interest are discussed.

It is a specific forum where States of emerging economies discuss their development, possibilities of scientific-technological progress and the existing gaps. It is important to participate, bring experiences, promote investments and boost our exports, he indicated.

In addition, he specified that the work carried out to become part of the Brics began at the end of 2021.

During 2022, we incorporated this aspiration into the agenda of what we can call presidential diplomacy, that is, in each meeting that President Alberto Fernández had with members of the group, he raised Argentina’s desire to join, he pointed out.

These days we are making progress in the incorporation that will help us to be part of the New Development Bank as shareholders, which will allow access to the loan portfolio, he added.

On the other hand, he questioned statements of the presidential candidates Patricia Bullrich (Together for Change) and Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza) about their intentions not to be part of the Brics and assured that they are statements for electoral purposes.

It is necessary to have a share of pragmatism and recognize that we need to develop our economy, open markets, generate greater purchasing power and improve human development standards of our population, said the head of Argentine diplomacy.
