Faced with the complex panorama in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, the World Food Program (WFP) is reinforcing its food and cash assistance in the region, although it warned that these actions “are on the limit” due to insufficient funds.
The United Nations pointed out that it is currently struggling to meet the needs of 1.5 million people.
Given the current scarcity of resources, the WFP prioritizes cash assistance and the identified population more quickly, Florencia Soto, deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said at a press conference on Friday.
The WFP itself warned that under these conditions it would be forced to “drastically reduce” the number of people with food insecurity that they can help as of October.
The program urgently requested 567 million dollars to meet the most pressing needs in the three provinces over the next six months.
