Niamey, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) The military junta that rules Niger reportedly announced that it would allow the armed forces of neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali to enter the country if it comes under attack.

According to a statement issued by Niger’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the three countries have agreed to provide each other with defense and security assistance in the event of aggression or terrorist attack.

The statement comes in the context of the visit to Niger by the foreign ministers of Burkina Faso and Mali, Olivia Rouamba and Abdoulaye Diop, respectively.

In a joint press briefing during their stay in this capital, the two foreign ministers reiterated their rejection to any intervention against the Nigerien people, adding that this would also be considered a declaration of war against their countries.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of Nigeria and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in turn, assured in a press release in Abuja that he was trying to curb that bloc, to prevent a military intervention against the coup junta in Niger and continue advocating for dialogue.

So far, the military junta has rejected such threats and appointed a new prime minister to form a transitional government.
