This is the largest amount of displaced in Africa, said the IOM press officer in the DRC, Daco Tambikila, who also noted the increase between early June and mid-July resulting from new waves of violence caused by different armed groups.
The provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri and Tanganyika, in the east of the country, are the most affected by this problem, which poses humanitarian challenges.
Displaced people need access to food, shelter, water, hygiene and sanitation, and primary health care, all of which burden the logistics of the new place they are headed to.
IOM is currently managing 78 sites for a total of 344,976 displaced, but millions live in very difficult conditions in other parts of the country or have emigrated to neighboring nations.
