Concern in Canada about new outbreak of Covid-19

Ottawa, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) The increase in hospitalizations due to Covid-19 is raising concern in Canada, where experts consider the most recent statistics as an early sign of a new wave of contagions.

Canada’s Public Health Agency reported an 11-percent increase in virus-related admissions to medical facilities last week, compared to the previous seven days.

According to statistics published by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), coronavirus-related hospitalizations have been resurgent for several months.

The figures indicate that between April 2022 and March 2023, a 19-percent increase in stays in medical institutions was reported in Canada for Covid-19 patients, in contrast to the same period during the previous year.

One of the main differences in this wave of hospitalizations is that the patients are older, with an average age of 75 compared to 63 in the previous period, the statistics showed.

Another key aspect is that the average length of stay increased from 13 to 20 days.

However, although patients spend more time in hospital, the mortality rate decreased by 1 percent.
