According to the organizing committee of the summit, the objective is to vindicate the Popular Unity government and highlight its validity and the importance of historical memory in order to reflect on the basis of sustaining democratic development in Chile.
“We believe that these meetings are very necessary, as they will bring together intellectuals, politicians and representatives of civil society at the highest level, so as to project the future without forgetting our history,” said the mayor of the commune.
Intellectuals, academics, and political and social leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean, the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and Asia, will participate in the event, which will take place from September 2nd to the 9th.
The summit will conclude on September 9th with the Declaration for Democracy and Human Rights.
September 11th will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the military coup led by Augusto Pinochet against the government of Salvador Allende, which gave way to 17 years of one of the bloodiest dictatorships in the continent. According to reports from different Truth Commissions, there were over 40,000 victims of the regime, including killed, detained, forcibly disappeared, imprisoned, and tortured, not counting more than 200,000 exiled.
