Lula supports Argentina’s Brics membership

Brasilia, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday expressed his support for Argentina's membership in the Brics, a group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

I stand up for our brothers from Argentina to be able to participate in the Brics, it is very important for them to be in the Brics,’ Lula said during his weekly broadcast through social networks.

He pondered that Argentina’s entry into the bloc would be fundamental for Brazil, due to the economic interdependence between the two countries.

‘Brazil cannot implement an industrial development policy without Argentina, it has to go together with Brazil,’ the former trade unionist pointed out, recalling that the neighboring country is the main buyer of national manufactured products.

In his speech, Lula criticized the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which only appears ‘when there are crises in small countries in Africa and Latin America’ and with its loans the debtor nation is imprisoned and cannot get out.

The founder of the Workers’ Party also promised to promote the de-dollarization of trade with the other members of the Brics.

He insisted that the emerging economies ‘cannot be dependent on a single country that has dollars’ and ‘live the fluctuations’ of that currency.
