Libya repatriates immigrants and tries to reduce flow of people

Tripoli, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) Libyan authorities on Tuesday reported the deportation of hundreds of immigrants of Egyptian and Nigerian nationality in an effort to contain the flow of people through its territory.

In this regard, Libyan Minister of the Interior Imad Trabelsi confirmed the deportation and pointed out that his country pays a huge bill for illegal immigration in its territory.

Trabelsi referred to the recent migration crisis created by the expulsion of thousands of sub-Saharan Africans from neighboring Tunisia to the border areas, people who were trying to cross to Europe by land and sea.

Local media echoed the latest report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which states that Libya is hosting more than 700,000 migrants from Niger, Egypt, Sudan, Chad and Nigeria.

Recently, undocumented migrants from sub-Saharan countries accused Tunisian authorities of expelling them from their territory and abandoning them in a desert area bordering Libya, according to testimonies collected by Tunisian media.
