The corpses were discovered in the forest of Dadia national park, and near the border with Türkiye, according to the source.

Giannis Artopoios, spokesman for the fire department, said the bodies were of people who “probably entered irregularly after crossing the Evros River,” which borders Greece.

The police activated a victim recognition team and began an investigation.

Meanwhile, the authorities fear that in the coming days the number of people killed in the dense forest of Dadia will increase, as it is a common crossing area for those crossing from Türkiye.

Several villages in the area were evacuated due to the proximity of the flames, which were fuelled by high temperatures, dryness and strong winds.

At least eight large fires are burning in Greece, the most serious of which started on Saturday near the port city of Alexandropolis.

Dadia is located to the north of that city, from where its main hospital was evacuated in the morning.

Press media transmitted images of reddened skies, dense columns of smoke and a rain of ash due to the strong winds.

High temperatures, dry environment and winds, which increase the risk of fires, will persist in Greece until Friday, according to meteorological services.
