A spokesman for the city council of that city, located in the region of Tuscany, said in statements published today in the news website Il Fatto Quotidiano, that this is the sixth time this year that migrants have arrived in that town aboard ships carrying out rescue work in the waters of the central Mediterranean.
On January 30, the boat Ocean Viking of the SOS Méditerranée group arrived at that port with 95 people; on April 19 and June 5, Life Support boats arrived there with 55 and 29 immigrants, while on July 7 and 19, the ship Geo Barents, of Doctors Without Borders, disembarked 196 and 214 migrants, respectively.
The prefect of that locality, Guido Aprea, pointed out that of the 196 migrants who arrived today, 80 will be sent to reception facilities in Tuscany, 71 to the Piedmont region and about thirty to the Umbria region.
According to the latest report issued by the Italian Ministry of the Interior, up to August 22, 105,483 irregular migrants arrived this year on the coasts of this nation, a figure much higher than the 51,328 that did so in the same period of 2022, which illustrates the seriousness of the problem.
