Guterres was invited to the coming event, headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, with an agenda to participate in the BRICS-Africa Outreach meeting and in high-level dialogue encounters.
During his visit, the Secretary-General will further meet with several leaders on the sidelines of the Summit.
Guterres will stress his call for solidarity and urgent action on issues such as climate change and the restructuring of the international financial system.
The BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will hold its meeting at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg from August 22-24 with the participation of over 30 heads of State from all over Africa.
The event’s slogan is “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism.”
The encounter will take place at a time when over 20 countries have formally applied to join the BRICS, and several others have expressed interest in joining the extended BRICS family.
