A statement issued by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in the capital said that the prevalence of severe malnutrition among children is extremely high, one of the worst in West and Central Africa.
The UN agency also indicated that the number of Nigerien malnourished infants is likely to increase on this territory if food prices rise further and the economic recession hits families and their incomes.
Calling on the international community to do more to speed up the arrivals in Niamey of vaccines to prevent diseases in children, UNICEF urged the parties involved in the Nigerien conflict to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers.
