Colombian Government congratulates Ecuador on election day

Bogota, Aug 21 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Colombia congratulated the people of Ecuador on Monday for the development of the election day on Sunday, "amid a democratic and peaceful spirit."

“Colombia reiterates its solidarity with the Ecuadorian people and its desire to continue to work with the fraternal country in order to strengthen democracy, peace and development in the region,” the Foreign Ministry noted.

On Sunday, voting day took place in Ecuador with an 82.26-percent participation rate, which passed without violent incidents, while 100,000 police and military personnel were deployed throughout the country.

Luisa González, from Revolución Ciudadana (Citizen’s Revolution), advanced to the second round with some 33 percent of the votes and thus became the first woman in the country to run for the presidency of the Republic in a runoff election; while Daniel Noboa, from the National Democratic Action alliance, came in second place with 24 percent.

After these results, the ballot will be held on October 15 and whoever the two candidates is elected will rule for 18 months, after President Guillermo Lasso signed the decree to dissolve the Assembly, where his possible dismissal was about to be voted.

The electoral campaign in Ecuador was marked by the assassinations of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, one of the most popular mayors in the country; Agustín Intriago; and other political leaders.
