China’s Foreign Ministry condemned an interview given by the leader and presidential candidate from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) during a stopover in the United States.

According to China, he is “someone who does not hesitate in betraying the interests of his nation to advance his selfish agenda and shamelessly request support from the United States for Taiwan’s independence, as well as a stubborn and absolute separatist.

“The Foreign Ministry denied every one of Lai’s statements, stressed that Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times, and rejected his party’s efforts to gain friendliness by using the concept of democracy at its convenience.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry recalled that Taiwan participates in international events after consultation with Beijing and under the global community’s respect for the One China principle.
