According to preliminary data, with 97.85 percent of the ballots processed, the former diplomat won 58.62 percent of the valid ballots in the elections held the day before in that Central American country.
His rival in the presidential race, Sandra Torres, from the National Unity of Hope, won some 36.63 percent of votes.
Official reports indicate that there was a 44.93-percent participation, 3.49 percent of null ballots and 1.25 percent of blank ballots.
Arevalo, a sociologist by profession, academic and congressional deputy, proposed as a transversal axis of his government’s plan the fight against corruption and impunity that is affecting Guatemala.
He will take over office as Guatemala’s president on January 14, 2024.
