According to a Xinhua report, the president expressed his wishes in response to a letter sent by the Youth and Student Exchange Association between the two nations and personalities from various sectors in Washington.

In his missive, Xi thanked for the good wishes for China’s hosting of the summer edition of the International University Sports Federation’s World University Games (Chengdu Universiade) and the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

“The hope and foundation of the China-U.S. relationship is its people, whose future is represented by the youth,” he added.

Xi expressed confidence that the U.S.-China Youth and Student Exchange Association and other friends of the country will contribute to friendly dialogue and steady development of U.S.-China relations.

At the government level, Washington-Beijing ties are at the worst moment in their history with tensions fueled by the Taiwan issue and the U.S. violation of the One China principle.
