Migrants rescued in Panamanian Darien jungle

Panama City, Aug 18 (Prensa Latina) The National Border Service (Senafront) of Panama rescued more than 40 irregular migrants of Chinese nationality, abandoned by coyotes in the Darien jungle pass.

According to the official report released on Thursday, the travelers, among them several minors, were located in the communities of Guayabo and Cocalito, on the border with Colombia.

Senafront showed videos of the transfer of these travelers in speedboats to provide them with medical attention.

Data from the National Migration Service (SNM) indicate that between January and June of this year almost 200,000 people passed through the dangerous jungle, a figure that could double by the end of this year, mostly Venezuelans, Haitians and Ecuadorians, but also people from Asia.

The Ombudsman’s Office has already warned of a 445 percent increase in the migration of children and adolescents through the Darien region in the first half of this year, when more than 40,000 children crossed the border compared to the 7,000 who crossed in the same period last year.

On the day, in an online press conference from New York, United States, authorities of the Department of Homeland Security, such as Luis Miranda, urged to use safe and legal routes, as well as to discourage proposals of criminal gangs that control these flows.

In addition, they insisted on the implementation of new immigration regulations which should provide for the deportation or expulsion of individuals and families who arrive illegally.
