Cases of West Nile Fever on the rise in Italy

Rome, Aug 18 (Prensa Latina) The number of cases of West Nile Fever in Italy has increased to 94, according to the Superior Institute of Health (ISS), an increase of 58,5% compared to the 55 reported in the previous report.

According to this ISS information, disclosed Friday by the newspaper La Repubblica, four deaths have already been recorded in the country in 2023, from May to date, and the latest victim was an 82-year-old man, who died in the hospital of Novara, in the northern Piedmont region, after falling ill 20 days ago.

After being bitten by a Culex species mosquito, the elderly man developed the first symptoms on July 30 with tremors, a feeling of uneasiness and general malaise, according to the note.

The circulation of West Nile virus was confirmed by the presence in mosquitoes and birds since May 2023, and “prevention measures on transfusions and transplants were activated early in the affected areas”, the report stated.
