Bangladesh demands US extradition of self-confessed killer

Dhaka, Aug 18 (Prensa Latin) Shahriar Alam, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, asked the United States to respect the laws of Bangladesh and hand over the confessed murderer of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation, it was reported today.

After participating as one of those most responsible for the death of the Bangladeshi leader on August 15, 1975, Rashed Chowdhury sought refuge in the United States, the diplomat denounced according to The Dhaka Tribune.

Shahriar told the media that he did not know exactly why and for what purpose the US did not return him.

The minister described the fateful day as the biggest human rights violation in Bangladesh after its independence.

He questioned that the United States speaks deeply on the issue of human rights and democracy, yet protects the person most responsible for the murder of the one known to all as Bangabandhu.

Shahriar pointed out that Bangladesh considers the northern country as a friend, but Bangladeshis are pained and frustrated by its attitude.

According to The Dakha Tribune, the five killers of Bangabandhu and most of his family are still free, and two of the criminals have been traced in Canada and the United States.

There is no alternative but the verdict of murderer against these criminals, in respect for the laws of Bangladesh and to end injustice and restore the rule of law, Shahriar Alam said.
