UNICEF warns about humanitarian needs in Yemen

Aden, Yemen, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned that more than 21.6 million people, including 11 million minors, need protection and humanitarian assistance in Yemen.

The conflict in Yemen caused one of the largest internal displacement crises worldwide, UNICEF stressed in a statement, noting that over 3.1 million people have been internally displaced since 2015.

UNICEF said it urgently needs $475.2 million to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and meet critical needs in health, nutrition, child protection and education by 2023.

Adele Khodr, UNICEF’s regional representative, recently reported that almost 11,000 children died or were injured as a result of the war unleashed in 2014.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, estimated at 500,000 the number of minors suffering from acute malnutrition .

According to Save The Children NGO, more than 2.4 million children in Yemen do not go to school.

The International Committee of the Red Cross considers that more than 20 million Yemenis, out of a population of 31 million, lack access to basic medical care, and 16.2 million are threatened by lack of food.
