On Wednesday, the Puerto Rico Seismic Network recorded the tremor in the Puerto Rico trench, some 282 kilometers away, at a point in the Atlantic Ocean northeast of this Caribbean island of 3.2 million inhabitants.
The quake occurred at a depth of 18.2 kilometers at coordinates 20.169 degrees north and 64.204 degrees west, according to the agency, which did not issue a watch or tsunami warning.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor was felt in an area near the Virgin Islands and in two areas north of Puerto Rico.
