The Cortes Generales (Parliament) begin their new legislature tomorrow, Thursday, and the first relevant point will be to elect the Board of Directors of the Lower House, whose holder will hold the third most important political office in the country, after King Felipe VI as head of State; and the President of the Government.

A piori, the key is held by the pro-independence Junts por Cataluña and to make it clear, its top leader and fugitive from justice, Carles Puigdemont, demanded from Belgium “verifiable facts” in exchange for the indispensable support of his seven deputies for the investiture of the next president of the Spanish Government.

Although tomorrow there will still be no vote on the investiture alternative chosen by the sovereign after meeting with the parliamentary groups, the title of the Congress of Deputies will show the first direct confrontation between the left and the right.

We cannot advance nationally on the basis of promises made by those who always fail to keep them, so verifiable facts are necessary before committing any vote, Puigdemont expressed on Twitter.

The Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) will propose the former president of the Balearic Islands Francina Armengol to lead the Lower House, who has the approval of the chief executive and secretary general of the PSOE, Pedro Sanchez.

Armengol’s nomination joined another piece of news that, although expected, needed confirmation. Sanchez indicated that he will present himself for investiture to be reelected as head of the Government, for which he needs the support of different parliamentary factions.

The idea, in any case, is to form a progressive majority in the Congress of Deputies, for which they need the support of the pro-independence Junts por Cataluña.
