fao-1
Havana, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported on Tuesday that it collaborates in Cuba to strengthen local food systems.

A press release from the UN agency said that as part of capacity building for the management and governance of local food systems, the organization supports 13 Cuban municipalities with the acquisition of 44 simple motorcycles and motorcycles with sidecars.

This work is being done in conjunction with with the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG), and will facilitate the mobility of producers, agricultural and forestry technicians in three projects currently underway.

The acquisition of the motorcycles is complemented by the purchase of other inputs such as electrical tricycles and bicycles, Toyota Hilux pick-up trucks, a Toyota Hiace minibus, among other means of transportation.

These purchases seek to enhance three main objectives: increasing climate resilience in Cuba’s agricultural ecosystems, introducing the results of science, technology and innovation in agricultural production, and supporting the implementation of food security policies.

The municipalities that are benefiting from these projects are Santa Clara, Remedios, Placetas, Quemado de Güines, Corralillo and Santo Domingo (Villa Clara), Los Arabos (Matanzas), Sancti Spíritus, Taguasco and Yaguajay (Sancti Spíritus) and Jobabo, Colombia and Amancio (Las Tunas).

These are projects such as Climate resilience in Cuba’s agricultural ecosystems, implemented with financing from the Green Climate Fund, and Increasing sustainable food security in Cuba, financed by the European Union (EU), which are initiatives of MINAG with technical assistance from FAO.
