Last August 4, following a letter from the president of this regional (northern) state, Yelikal Kefale, requesting the federal government to intervene and ‘implement the necessary legal framework’ to control the deteriorating security crisis, the Council adopted this decision, the Ethiopian News Agency recalled.
In his letter, Kefale urged the adoption of appropriate measures based on the country’s Constitution to abort the crisis provoked by armed groups belonging to the Fano militia that caused major humanitarian, social and economic problems, and they were unable to control it by the regular police authorities.
The General Directorate of the State of Emergency, a structure put in place when the state of emergency was declared, confirmed last Thursday the recovery of peaceful conditions in Bahir Dar, Debre Markos, Debre Birhan, Lalibela, Gonder and Shewa Robit.
A statement released by the state-owned Fana Broadcasting Corporate television station indicated that in the initial stage of the restoration to normal, priority was given to the areas with the largest population, high commercial and tourist activity, political and industrial centers.
The armed groups in Fano were offered the opportunity to surrender and hand over their weapons to the national security forces, however, they rejected the proposal and chose violence.
According to the report, the population in general rejected the vandalism and insecurity last week and supported the government troops, the latter concentrated on capturing the members of the group described as extremist and restoring citizens’ peace.
