Brics ministers sign declaration on agriculture in South Africa

Pretoria, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) The Agriculture ministers of the Brics group countries signed a Joint Declaration in South Africa that contemplates cooperation agreements on the subject between those nations.

As reported today by the South African Ministry of the sector, among the agreed points is to reduce the impact of climate change on agriculture and food production, as well as ensure access to these by the most vulnerable.

Likewise, aspects related to agricultural trade and investment; improve cooperation and innovation in agricultural technology, and strengthen the exchange of information in this sphere of economic activity of the members of the Brics (Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa).

On climate change, it is said in the text, the Brics Ministers requested the provision of means for developing countries that allow them to reduce the negative impacts of this global phenomenon on food security.

In particular, those resources that make it possible to improve people’s adaptability and resilience, and in food production.

In addition, as stated in the document, they resolved to advocate for joint efforts among the Brics member countries for the adoption of best agricultural practices that are aligned with internationally agreed objectives, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The ministers also recognized the importance of food and nutrition security programs to reduce hunger and malnutrition among women, youth, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Likewise, it is highlighted in the statement, they advocated the implementation of policies that improve open, free and fair agricultural trade, and encouraged the elimination of unjustified trade restrictions.

The meeting, held last week in the northern province of Limpopo, and which is in preparation for the XV Brics Summit to be held from August 22 to 24 in Johannesburg, was held under the theme “Strengthening collaboration towards sustainable agricultural production and increased productivity.
